On the Tsunami

Like many Americans, I awoke Sunday morning to the news of a tremendous disaster, yet could not know the full extent of the destruction, and still do not. My thoughts go out to the people the world over who are affected by the worst natural disaster of our lifetime.

Of course, now the media outlets are sending their minions to the airports in the countries worst-hit by the disaster in hopes of scoring some prime home video footage of the tsunami as it approached the mainland. Rest assured that we can count on each newer and more grisly video find being spun over and over again until we can no longer stand it, or at least until the American viewing public demands a return to the subjects most important to it: Amber Frey and US Magazine.

What I find interesting is that there was another huge quake off the southern coast of Australia, a mere 3 days before the quake that spawned the wave. The USGS reports a magnitude 8.1 of the coast of Macquarie Island on December 23, 2004. Nothing has been said in the reports of any link between the two, but given the relative proximity of the two seismic events, wouldn't one suspect there'd be?

Then it begins

As I sit here in my comfortable perch some 170 feet above U.S. 59, the pilot episode of "Lost" is slowly but steadily downloading onto my ReplayTV.

Those of you who read this blog (the one of you, kind of) will be all too familiar with my disdain for the much ballyhooed and far inferior TiVo. Internet video sharing, you say? Can you do that, TiVo?

The revolution is already well underway...

Variegated Musings

There's been quite some time since my last post, but by my calculations, I'm making it under the wire by some nine days...

When will the counselor recieve his Birthday / Chrismuhannakwanzaakah present? And what will he do with it when he does? I can only hope that it gets at least one close listening before being relgated to its place among the other 10,000 tunes on his little white piece of silicon exuberance.

I watched the sun rise over the East Houston refineries this morning, and I have to say the dirty Houston air makes for a spectacular show.

Even though I get to play a free round of golf this afternoon at Meadowbrook Farms, a Greg Norman-designed track out in the suburban wasteland of Katy, Texas, I still wish I was in the Himalaya.
